Working with SPI/INtools part I: Creating Instruments and Control Loops

This is a short sequence resume of performing operations needed to use SPI/INtools.

Creating Instruments and Control Loops

1. Defining instrument type profile (FI, FE, FT, PI, PT, ZV, PSH, etc.)

  • Open the instrument index
  • Click Table > Instrument Types
  • Create a new Instrument Type by click New
  • Click Profile to open Instrument Type Profile dialog box
  • Fill in as needed in Instrument Type Profile both in General and also Wiring and Control System tabs.
  • In Wiring and Control System tab, click New beneath Conventional Connection, then fill in the blank as needed.
  • Don’t forget to click apply before click OK.

2. Defining reference wiring for a field device

  • Creating Device Panels
    • Show Reference Explorer (F8) and Domain Explorer (F7)
    • On the Reference Explorer, expand the Panels folder and right-click the Device Panels folder.
    • Click New > Device Panel (Conventional)
    • Naming new device panel in Device Panel Properties
  • Creating Terminal Strip
    • Right-click the new device panel we’ve just made, click New > Terminal Strip
    • Click New
    • Fill in the blank as needed in Terminal Strip Configuration (configuration name, terminal numbering, terminal strip properties)
  • Creating a Reference Cable
    • On the Reference Explorer, right-click the Cables folder, click New > Cable
    • Click New
    • Fill in the blank as needed in Cable Configuration (total number of sets, default cable set type, cable configuration, cable set, cable default name, cable set details)
    • Fill in the blank as needed in Cable Properties (cable, description, type, etc.)

3. Creating Loops with Tag Using the Domain Explorer

  • Defining a Loop and Add Tag Numbers
    • Open Loops folder on the Unit Area in the Domain Explorer, then right-click New > Loop
    • Type the loop number on the New Loop Number dialog box
    • Fill in the blank as needed in the Loop Number Properties (loop service, measured variable, loop type, P&ID Drawing, and clear the apply equipment to tags check box)
    • Fill in the blank as needed in the New Tag Number dialog box
    • Choose the fit instrument type on the Select Instrument Type dialog box, then click OK
    • Enter tag number data and complete the definitions on the Tag Number Properties
    • Click Apply when done, the click New add another tag number to the loops

In working with SPI/INtools, there’re some special features/optional instruction to create Loops. There’re the following:

  • Adding a Tag Number to an Existing Loop
    • Open Instruments folder on the Unit Area in the Domain Explorer, then right-click New > Instrument
    • Type tag number on the New Tag Number dialog box
    • Enter tag number data and complete the definitions on the Tag Number Properties
  • Creating a Loop with a Single Instrument Tag (including how to find a loop)
    • In the Instrument Index Module window, on the toolbar, click New Tag
    • Type tag number on the New Tag Number dialog box
    • Click OK on the both Loop Name and Loop Number Properties dialog box
    • Enter tag number data and complete the definitions on the Tag Number Properties, then click OK
  • Duplicating a Loop
    • In the Domain Explorer, right-click the existing loop you want to duplicate, then click Duplicate
    • Change the number of the loop on the Duplicated Loop Number, click OK
    • Select the Select all and Copy instrument type from source tag numbers check boxes if the new loop absolutely typical
    • Fill in the blank as needed in the Loop Number Properties, then click OK to start the duplication process
    • Click Yes when prompted to edit the tags, then the Tag Number Properties dialog box opens displaying data of the first tag associated with the new loop
    • Click Apply when finished editing tag data, then click Next to display the data of the next tag and continue editing, then click OK
  • Creating Loops and Tag Numbers in Batch Mode
    • In the Instrument Index Module window, click Edit > Typical Loop Management
    • On the Typical Loop Management dialog box, click New
    • Enter data on the Typical Loop properties (loop name, measured variable, loop type, loop function, loop service)
    • In the Associated typical tags pane, click Add to add a sequence typical tag to the loop, then click OK
  • Creating Plant Loops in Batch Mode
    • In the Instrument Index Module window, click Edit > Batch Loop Creation
    • Select the typical loop model you want to create from the Typical Loop list we’ve made on Batch Loop Creation dialog box
    • Type loop number in the New Loop Number box [use (-) for sequentially number, and (,) for not sequentially number], then click Create
  • Searching for a Specific Loop and View Loop Tag Properties
    • In the Domain Explorer toolbar, click Search
    • On the Search dialog box, define entity type and entity name (by typing ** between name), then click Search Now
  • Finding for an Existing Loop
    • In the Instrument Index Module window, on the toolbar, click Loop Properties ( )
    • On the Enter Loop Number dialog box, click Find
    • On the Find Loop dialog box, in the Loop number box, enter % followed by character for loop (e.g. %P for Pressure, %F for Flow, etc.)

This is the end of this part. The next part is Performing Wiring Operations.

      I’m so sorry if you couldn’t get enough information about INtools.
      I thought it’s too hard to achieve for posting all the things about INtools as you’ve mentioned above since i’m currently very busy with my work now.
      But actually, you can see and learn it all on SPI manual book. It’s available together on the software package.

    • In your installed software folder i.e. Smart Plant, You are having various PDF files, like Introduction, User guide for Detail engineering, Basic Engineering. If you read it and follow the steps in it, And then try to implement the same with your project. You will become a master by practice. Best of Luck!
